Object

In the world-wide web, an object is any resource that can be accessed using the Hypertext Transfer Protocol. Objects are requested in the URL of the HTTP request and carried to the web client from the web server in the HTTP response: the date of modification (used in Web Caching) is specified by the Last-Modified field, the size of the object (in bytes) is specified by Content-Length field, and the type and format of an object is defined by the content-type field in the HTTP response. The content of the object will be carried in the response payload and will be formatted by the web browser according to the content-type.

Examples of objects which can be rendered within a web page are HTML and XML documents, Cascading Style Sheets, JavaScripts, images, embedded audio and video files, flash media and Java applets. Other objects which can be obtained by HTTP and which are typically rendered by helper applications are PDF files, Word and Excel documents and downloadable MP3 and Video files.
