glossary:process

Process (Host)

In networking terms, the word process refers to that part of a network application which executes within the memory of a host (or end-system). In order for two processes to communicate with each other, each process must have a unique address on the the network. The host itself will be uniquely identified by its internet address; each process has its own identifier which is called a port number. The port number is assigned to the socket through which the two processes communicate.
