====== Sir Tim Berners-Lee ====== Sir Tim Berners-Lee Sir Tim Berners-Lee (as pictured on his web site) invented the world-wide web while working at CERN during the late 1980s. From a technical point of view, Berners-Lee's contribution was four-fold: he adapted the already existing idea of hypertext to provide a distributed information system that would work over the internet; he created the hypertext transfer protocol; the concept of a Uniform Resource Locator and the Hypertext Markup Language. He is currently director of the World Wide Web Consortium and a professor at both MIT and Southampton. He was knighted in 2003. A short biography is here. ---- Glossary : A | B | C | D | E | F | G | H | I | J | K | L | M | N | P | Q | R | S | T | U | V | W | X | Y | Z
