EG-253: Bibliography

This is a list of resources (printed books, eBooks and web sites) that you may find useful, arranged by section. This is a Wiki so feel free to add your own recommendations!

As usual, tastes vary, I suggest that you have a look at as many of these books as you can before you decide which (if any) to buy. My recommendation is: If you can afford to buy two books, consider Unix: Visual Quickstart Guide and Running Linux. If you're going to buy just one book buy Running Linux. If you are going to buy just zero books, read the Introduction to Linux at the Linux Documentation Project and the first edition of the The Linux Cookbook.

If you want a cheapish book just for learning Command-Line Linux, you may find one of these useful:

• D. Ray and E. Ray, Unix: Visual QuickStart Guide, 2nd Edition, Peachpit Press, 2003.
• J. Peek, G. Todino, J. Strang, Learning the UNIX Operating System, 5th Edition, O'Reilly Media Inc., 2001.

This book is a good introduction to Linux as a desk top replacement for windows:

• J. Valade, Spring into Linux, Addsion Wesley, 2005.

If you decide to install Ubuntu desktop edition (or indeed the server edition), you may find these recent publications useful. They both support the 6.06 LTS version of Ubuntu:

• Benjamin Mako Hill et al., The Official Ubuntu Book, 5th Ed., Prentice Hall, 2010. (Covers Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Edition).
• Jonathan Oxer, Kyle Rankin and Bill Childers, Ubuntu Hacks, O'Reilly Media Inc., 2006. Tips & tools for exploring, using and exploiting Linux.

If you find yourself using Linux beyond this module, you'll probably want one or two of these in your reference library:

• M. Welsh and M. K. Dalheimer, Running Linux, 5th Edition, O'Reilly Media Inc., 2006.
• E. Siever, et al., Linux in a Nutshell, Fifth Edition, O'Reilly Media Inc., 2005.
• M. Joy, S. Jarvis and M. Luck, Introducing UNIX and Linux (Grassroots S.), Palgrave Macmillan, 2002.
• M. Stutz, The Linux Cookbook: Tips and Techniques for Everyday Use, 2nd Edition, No Starch Press, 2004. Published version of a former TLDP on-line document.
• S. Powers et al., Unix Power Tools, 3rd Edition, O'Reilly Media Inc., 2002. Everything you could possibly want to know … and then some! A worthwhile investment (it's not cheap) for the power user.
